As airport authority, ADM Aéroports de Montréal would like to set the record straight regarding the article published in La Presse on February 2, 2024. We would like to reiterate that we are committed to the safety of all users of the YUL airport site including airport community employees.
That said, we’d like to add a few clarifications to the text, while demonstrating our commitment to countering this problem.
A snapshot of the situation
The growing number of car thefts in Montreal and across Canada is a real scourge, and not just at the airport. In fact, according to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), 112 car thefts were reported on the YUL site including 6 in parking lots P-10 and P-11, compared with more than 9,500 stolen vehicles on the island over the past year. Our aim is not to minimize the situation, but to put the data into perspective.
That said, this is an extremely worrying issue for ADM, as the security of our facilities and users is an integral part of our mission. That is why we’ve added patrol officers specifically assigned to the parking lots and increased the number of surveillance cameras and automatic license plate readers across the site.
Our Airport Patrol team keeps a close watch on the premises 24/7, and of course, pays particular attention to the most high-risk vehicles. All this is done in close collaboration with the SPVM, which conducts the necessary investigations to dismantle organized crime networks and make arrests.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility
We have a collective responsibility to ensure that our facilities remain safe, for our colleagues and our passengers.
If you witness an unusual situation – such as someone loitering in a parking lot – or a crime, contact Airport Patrol immediately at 514-420-5000. For your own safety and that of others, please do not attempt to intervene.
