Do you know why Fire Prevention Week is always held in early October, during the full week that includes October 9, in both Canada and the United States?

It is to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of October 9, 1871, when 250 people died, 100,000 were made homeless and 17,400 buildings were destroyed. In Quebec, the first Fire Prevention Week was held in 1990.

The Aéroports de Montréal Fire Service (ADMFS)

Governed by the Canadian Aviation Regulations, the primary mission of SIADM firefighters is to participate in aircraft fire suppression operations.

Each of the two airport sites – Montréal-Trudeau and Montréal-Mirabel – has its own fire station, strategically located near the runways, so that firefighters can respond to aircraft fires within a reasonable time.

Each station has four teams of firefighters, working in shifts to provide protection 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Fire prevention is your responsibility!”

Each year in Québec, fires cause an average of:

  • 13 houses damaged per day
  • 400 injuries
  • 24,000 evacuees

Nearly 49% of fires that occur in homes are related to human distraction or error.

That’s why we encourage you to adopt safe behaviours daily to prevent fires and inform yourself about making an escape plan.

Protect your loved ones. You could save lives!
