Did you know that one of the main risks to aviation safety are FODs? These objects, sometimes small, sometimes larger, sometimes even unusual, that are left on the apron or runways and can cause catastrophic damage.

Foreign Object Debris (commonly referred to as FODs) includes, but is not limited to, paper, cardboard, plastic, vegetable matter, puddles of oil or gasoline, glass, metal parts belonging or not belonging to an aircraft, tools, hardware, and so on.

Every year, ADM Aéroports de Montréal undertakes numerous awareness-raising efforts with its employees and members of the airport community to minimize the risks associated with FODs.

FODs, a controllable risk

FODs can be dangerous. Blown by an aircraft, it can injure a person. Sucked up by an engine, it can cause damage up to and including an aircraft crash.

Keeping an eye open, picking up personal belongings or those that catch our attention on the apron, reporting non-recoverable FODs and reacting promptly to debris are all behaviors that can help reduce the risks associated with FODs. So is maintaining a clean working environment, for the safety of you, your colleagues and our passengers.

Securing your work tools before leaving the premises, avoiding throwing your personal belongings on the ground and taking care not to let anything fly away are all easy actions to take.

Over the past few months, ADM Aéroports de Montréal has installed several FOD garbage cans near the jetties and outside access points on the apron (they’re easily recognizable by their mustard yellow color!). Don’t hesitate to use them!

Reminder: the next FOD Walk at YUL

Are you committed to aviation safety? Do you dream of walking the apron (again, or for the first time)? Do you enjoy socializing while working for a good cause? And would you like to get involved in making YUL a safer environment?

If you answered “yes” to at least one of these questions, don’t delay: sign up for the next FOD Walk at YUL on October 20, from 10 a.m. to noon.

We look forward to seeing you there!
