Every movement airside, whether by aircraft, vehicle, or pedestrian, must be carried out with vigilance, coordination, and respect for established procedures.

During the 2025 Canadian Airport Safety Week, the SMS and OHS teams are joining forces to highlight an important issue: preventing runway incursions.

What is an incursion?
An incursion occurs when an aircraft, vehicle, or person enters a runway or controlled area without authorization, compromising the safety of operations. Even on the apron or taxiways, poor coordination or failure to follow procedures can lead to critical safety events.

What are the risks?

  • Collision with a moving aircraft
  • Serious or fatal injuries
  • Significant property damage
  • Disruption of air operations
  • Regulatory investigations and sanctions (in cases of intentional negligence)

What influences these risks?

  • High traffic volume
  • Configuration changes due to numerous airside construction sites
  • Complex coexistence of aircraft and vehicles.

How to prevent incursions?

  • Respect the authorizations issued by the Apron Management Section or NAV Canada at all times. Never make assumptions; always verify.
  • Use standardized radiotelephony phrases for clear communication.
  • Stay alert to movements around you and visual signals.
  • Respect speed limits and avoid restricted areas.
  • Immediately report any ambiguous or risky situation.
  • Keep your training up to date and consult your supervisor if in doubt.

Airside safety is everyone’s responsibility!
Pilots, drivers and ground personnel all play a vital role. By following procedures, staying alert to our surroundings, and communicating clearly, we all help reduce the risk of incursions and ensure a safe operational environment.
