It’s hard to celebrate National Airport Safety Week without talking about movement area safety. Today, we’d like to give you a better understanding of how these areas work, and the golden rules for getting around them, as they are used for landing, take-off and aircraft movements on the ground.

 Movement area 101 tips

To ensure the safety of ground operations, vehicle and aircraft traffic must coexist smoothly. There are five golden rules to ensure your safety and that of your colleagues when driving airside:

  • Carry out a pre-departure check (VAD)
  • Have your valid AVOP license and RAIC card at hand
  • Fasten your seat belt (yes, it’s compulsory!).
  • Respect traffic signs and regulations (speed, parking, etc.).
  • Avoid using your cell phone while driving (yes, even if it’s urgent!)

These rules may seem obvious to you, but they’re nonetheless essential for everyone’s safety, including your own.

In addition to these five golden rules, here are a few tips that could well save more than one life:

  •  Adopt healthy lifestyle habits to remain fit to perform your job safely, not only for yourself but also for your colleagues and our passengers.
  • Stay alert to signs of fatigue among your colleagues at the wheel. Responsible behavior also means taking care of those around you.
  • Long working hours and alternating day/night shifts can have an impact on your driving. Remember to get quality sleep, eat well and exercise! These are sure-fire ways to stay in shape.
  • We tend to forget it, but our cell phone is also a major source of distraction: avoiding using it while on the move can save lives, starting with your own.

Traffic in movement areas remains a constant concern. That’s why we’re preparing a new awareness campaign. Keep your eyes open!

Be vigilant for yourself and others!

Efficient and safe human activity depends on human and organizational factors. It is the primary cause of the risk of vehicular accidents.

Remain vigilant for signs of fatigue in your colleagues at the wheel:

  • Yawning frequently, blinking incessantly
  • Late braking
  • Going the wrong way
  • Difficulty finding a comfortable position
  • Changing lanes involuntarily
  • Stop looking in mirrors
  • Responsible behavior also means taking care of those around you!
  •

Do you think you know everything there is to know about these rules? Then why not complete the second quiz (apprentice level)?
